Press Pass:

The inside scoop on all things PR

By Rachael Herrscher
Do It Yourself

This is the first of a series of posts related to my recent “do-it-yourself” press trip to New York. What worked, what didn’t, the good, the bad and the ugly.

I believe in a non-traditional approach to PR. For me it’s always yielded better results. I didn’t major in communications; I’ve never been employed by a PR firm. I’ve just been frustrated by flaky PR companies in the past that have wasted my time and money and have led to the frustration that pushed me into wingin’ it.

So many of us think that the world of media is not for us to access. We think we need a top PR firm to handle it for us, and we expect that someone else should be able to come along and know our message better than we do as entrepreneurs.

Most of the time, as an entrepreneur, you know your message, and you can speak it more passionately than anyone else. You know your target audience because you are most likely the poster child for your target audience. And if you are not, you certainly have an inspiration for what is, and that is why you started your business.

Everyone has different skill sets, and these posts might not be for some of you. But for many of you stereotypical entrepreneurs–you were simply born with the skills you need to attract attention to your company. You are visionary, you are innovators, you are passionate about what you’ve done. You have a story to tell. Believing that you have a story is the first step–sticking your foot in the door is the next.
